There is generally a lot to think about in a living room : the flooring, the furniture, the walls, the curtains, the accessories and where on earth to put the TV so that it does not become the focal point of the room. Decisions about window valances can feel like one decision too many when you are updating your room however you really ought to consider them. They add a wonderful framework to your windows which curtains alone can not provide and they hide a less than perfect curtain rod in many cases too. And, of course, they add a touch of luxury that only something purely decorative rather than functional can offer.

In a formal living room valances can provide another formal feature to cement the character of the room. And in a less formal one they can add to the softness and informality by hiding the hard edge at the top of the windows.

In pictures of drawing rooms from days gone by you will find many examples of window valances. They were generally very grand and with neatly arranged swags and tails in opulent fabric over stunning curtains and very tall windows.

Of course, your windows might not live up to the grandeur of those dimensions so you do have to make sure that your valances are not too large and complicated for your windows and style of home, but simple swags and tails in proportion to the size and shape of your windows can look good on any window in a formal room.

If your style is definitely not formal, you can use a scarf type valance draped over a pretty drapery rod to accent your windows. These are less expensive to create as you just need a long thin piece of fabric which drapes well and a bit of patience to get the shape right. (Once you have it, pin your window valance in position or you will be mad when it slips off the rod).
