What is a Gluten Intolerance?
Scientific research has recently found that far more individuals that we once suspected suffer from food intolerances. Some experts say that a whopping 25% of the population has some degree of food sensitivity. Unlike a true allergy, which is an immune system response, a food intolerance can develop over time. In fact, it is not uncommon for adults to develop a non-allergic gastrointestinal response to certain foods. While a lactose intolerance is by far the most common type of food sensitivity, lately we have been hearing a lot more about gluten or wheat intolerance. Let’s take a look at what a gluten intolerance is and what you can do if you or someone you love has a sensitivity to wheat.
Wheat intolerance is a non-allergic negative reaction to the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, spelt, rye and barley. Gluten is what makes our bread fluffy and rise. You may be surprised to learn that gluten is also used in foods like ice cream to thicken it.
The most common response to gluten intolerance is a gastrointestinal response. This can happen right after ingestion, but most often it takes a day or two. This can make it very difficult for a doctor to recognize. Other symptoms may be skin problems like hives or rashes. Some people even report that gluten consumption can zap their energy or leave the depressed.
If you suspect that you have a gluten intolerance, you will want to go see your doctor. After ruling out something more serious, like celiac disease, you will most likely be put on a gluten free diet. Some physicians may also suggests and elimination-reintroduction diet.
The good news is that following a gluten free diet is much easier than it once was. There are numerous gluten free food products on the market that can allow you to enjoy everything from brownies to pizza. And, when the holiday’s role around your friends and family members will be happy to know that it is very easy to find gluten free gift baskets!
