The Origin of UPVC Conservatories
It was in 17th century when the earliest conservatories were known. The designs were so basic and the conservatories were still made of stone. Conservatories made from iron cast were only possible in the mid-19th century. With the introduction of iron cast into the construction and manufacturing industry, the designs of conservatories became intricate and elaborate. This is made possible because iron is a relatively soft metal that can easily be formed into various designs. But the use of iron in the construction of conservatories did not last long. The tension of the soft metal is weak and it readily forms rust. In addition, it became very expensive to maintain the desired temperature of conservatories because iron did not have the property of insulating heat.
Fortunately, with the advent of technology many construction problems were solved and many products were introduced which greatly improved the quality of materials used in the construction business. One of these is the introduction of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride or PVC, now heavily used in the building of UPVC Conservatory structures.
Polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic polymer which was first discovered by Henri Victor Regnault and Eugen Bauman in 1835 and 1872, respectively. But these individuals found it hard to utilize Polyvinyl Chloride in commercial products because the plastic was so rigid and brittle. It was only in 1926 when Semon and the B.F Goodrich Company have successfully developed a method to plasticized PVC that this material achieved widespread commercial use.
Common salt and petroleum or natural gas is the two raw materials where polyvinyl chloride came from. PVC consists of chemical compounds such as chlorine, hydrogen and carbon. When PVC is unplasticized it means that it is not softened by the addition of chemicals known as plasticizers. Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride is otherwise known as rigid polyvinyl chloride. Its usage in the construction of UPVC Conservatories is endless.
