Techniques For Washing Hands For Individuals Preparing Meals In Kitchens
If you enter the restroom in practically any restaurant or grocery store you will see a sign that directs persons who work with your food to wash their hands before handling your food. Hand washing is not only important in food preparation in commercial kitchens, it should also become a part of our own cooking habits.
It should be common sense to wash ones hands after using the bathroom before you prepare the food for someone else or for yourself. Even so, many people simply ignore these simple instructions. Hands also need to be washed after handling raw foods. Bacteria from one raw food can be transferred to another so that your salad may be teaming with bacteria.
Many times we may think that we have stomach flu, but in actuality, we have a case of food poisoning. If our food is prepared without proper hand washing techniques, the bacteria that is transferred to the food can begin to grow and in a short while, we are eating food that is covered in salmonella or e-coli bacteria. These bacteria can cause severe gastrointestinal problems. A person with a weakened immune system could even die from the poisoning.
Proper washing of your hands begins with wetting the hands with warm water. Once your hands are wet, you need to apply soap and scrub your hands for thirty seconds. One suggestion is to sing through the song Happy Birthday once as you wash your hands. This takes about the required thirty seconds. Rinse the hands in warm water. Dry on a clean towel. Be careful that you do not touch anything else before you touch your food.
Many commercial kitchens and some state laws require workers to wash hands in the restroom as well as when they enter the kitchen. The additional safeguard would also be a good practice for your own home.
Once you finish preparing your food and have cleaned all preparation surfaces, you should also wash your hands one more time so that any food born bacteria is not spread to other surfaces in your home.
With all the washing, it is easy for your hands to become dried out. You may want to choose a good moisturizing soap and use a good hand cream or lotion after you finish your work in the kitchen.
It is just as important that your hands be clean when preparing your food at home as it is when working in commercial kitchens.
