Overnight Camp Safety issues

Shortly, nearly 10 million children be going to Summer Camps. But before they go, health experts are issuing strong new advice to both parents and camp directors, and recommending new precautions to protect campers’ health.

The American Academy of Pediatrics along with the American Camp Association created an official policy statement about camper health and Summer Camp responsibilities. Edward Walton, M.D. is lead author of the paper.

the key to this policy is parents need to thoroughly determine whether a camp is right for their child’. Don’t just assume its great because your childs friends are going. One need to assess if it meets their childs mental, emotional and physical well-being, as well as their interests and skills.

That means, Walton says, that camps should provide parents with a complete picture of what their programs involve, whether it’s strenuous sports, rough wilderness camping, horseback riding — or intense music or computer practice. If an activity raises risk for kids with certain medical conditions, for instance scuba diving and asthma, camps should tell parents about those risks ahead of time.

Prevention of homesickness begins long before camp starts. Parents and doctors alike need to be involved.

Walton, suggests “Parents should also avoid making pre-arranged plans with their children about picking them up if they get homesick. If parents discuss camp positively, avoid expressing doubts about a child’s ability to avoid homesickness”.

With the new guideline, the AAP also recommends that its members — the pediatricians who treat many of America’s children — get involved with camps in their local area to make sure that health policies and standing orders are up-to-date. They can also act as medical backups to the nurses and paramedic-trained camp health officers on site at camps — instead of the local emergency room or urgent care center, which Walton’s study found was the case 75 percent of the time.

Asthma and allergies also bring new challenges for camps. Parents need to teach their children how to use rescue inhalers or EpiPens (allergy-calming epinephrine injection devices). With or with out the summer camp. Camps need to help children have them nearby at all times.

Delay in not having these items handy can have real health consequences for the child.

The new guideline do not give recommendations for summer camps that serve of children with special needs. However, it suggest that local pediatricians take part in such camps, and help establish programs specific to them.

Sorority Conventions

Being in a sorority has been amazing. Since I am an out of state student, I did not know very many people when I came to my school. It was scary to think that I would have to meet a ton of new people on my own. Thankfully though, a girl on my dorm floor told me about rush week and got me pretty excited about it. I went through recruitment and I now have an amazing group of friends and have done so much with my sorority.

I have stayed friends with most of the girls that I have met my freshman year in my sorority over the past 4 years. And I have also had many opportunities with them to help my community and raise awareness for charities that I feel strongly about. We team up with Dove to teach younger girls and teens to feel great about themselves. I have also gotten to work with a children’s hospital.

There are a ton of great things that we get to do each year and one of the best things is pick people to go to a team building a leadership conference. We learn how to work better as a group and also how to get more people in our sorority. Another thing that it helps us do and communicate with the community and get them involved in our events and charities. This way we don’t just have college students, we have families and schools and even retirement homes as well helping out our cause and driving in awareness to people who may not have known at all in the past.

I was picked to go last year to the convention and it was amazing because we got to take a private jet there. Twenty of us from my chapter went and we got to the airport and we had no idea about the private jet charter so we were surprised when we got there! We took it to headquarters in Texas and then home again after back to school.

I wish that there was a way for us to go every year but I guess it is only fair to leave those spots open for the girls that have not yet had the chance. We learned so much that we are going to use for the next few years and when we got back we help little group meetings to teach everyone else what we learned and how to use it in our chapter and our next events. Our annual event that we are known for was a huge hit last year and I would like to think it will just keep getting better with the advice we are getting.

Consider jet charter for your upcoming trip with friends. Private jets are a great way to kick off your trip and relax even before you get there. Grab a totally unique version of this article from the Uber Article Directory
