February 3rd, 2010 No comments

There are lots of wall clocks in the world. Even more types if you count wall clocks that are not mounted on a wall. From modern styes to retro, antique to novelty. Clocks come in all shapes and sizes to the large wall clock to the tiny small wall clock. Clocks can be made of wood, wood wall clocks are normally stained and give a very stylish look. Plastic wall clocks are cheaper and do not damage easy. Metal wall clocks give a more modern look and can be made with many types of metals and styles. Some of these are copper, steel, and iron wall clocks.

The retro wall clock is a clock that takes the “modern” look of older time periods such as the 70s and 80s. These clocks are neat and add flare. Novelty clocks are theme clocks. They take anything and make it the theme of the cock. Holidays, cats, places, if its a noun, it can be a novelty clock. Disney and cat clocks are very well used themes.

Grandfather clocks are the most well known types of antique clocks. The grandmother clock is the shorter version of the grandfather clock. These clocks feature a pendulum. The pendulum clock is well known for its sound. “Tick, Tock.”

There are just as many ways a clock tells time as there is types of clocks. There is of course the standard analog clock and the digital clock. The analog clock has hands that tell time, using two hands and an optional third hand to count seconds. The smaller hand counts the hours and the longer hand counts the minutes in the hour. The extra hand counts the seconds in the minute.

Digital clocks show time by displaying the time in a format on the screen. This can be displayed in Hours:Minutes:Seconds with the seconds optional. These clocks can show other formats as well but most know this one the best. Digital clocks also may show the date. Some analog clocks show the date as well, but this is not as common.

What makes a clock work matters, since if a clock stops keeping time, it has no use. There are many types of power, the most to common are mechanical and electricity. Mechanical power is from hand cranked spring loaded, that when let go slowly powers the clock. This can be a problem if you forget to re crank the clock. The other type is weights, that drop slowly turning the clock hands. The same problem applies if you forget to reset the weights. Electricity lets you power the clock on a battery or chord, these do not have problems, but the battery will die after many months and the power can go out, killing the clock.

The Wall Clock

The wall clock is one of the most over looked, under appreciated, and miss understood mechanical marvels. The clock tells time, or course everyone knows this. Most however do not know how the clock came to be, or how a clock works. If you ever take apart a mechanical clock, you will be amazed at how complex it really is. All the gears, pins, spinning and somehow keeping the time.

Many different types of clocks exist and ways the clocks work is just as different. Some run on gears and weights, called mechanical, others run on electricity called digital. There are even clocks that run using atoms called atomic clocks. They run for many life times without loss of accuracy.

These are modern clocks of course. Clocks of older times are less complicated. Most run on the same principles as the new ones.

The first clocks had been powered using only the sun. They had been called Shadow Clocks and Sundials. The sun castes different shadows from the clock and that was used to find the time. Only problem this method did not work at night and so was not the most useful clock made.

Water clocks came next. These clocks had been created by filling a bucket with water. A small hole let the water out the bottom of the bucket. Lines on the bucket marked the hours and as the water hit the line it was that hour. Still, these clocks had flaws as the temperature changed how fast the water would flow. If it was too cold the water would freeze. If it was too hot the water would evaporate faster.

Finally there was a bit of hope. The sand clock, also known as the Hourglass, was invented. Sand can not evaporate or freeze. It flows at the same speed no matter what temperature. Sand can be closed off in glass and sealed so nothing can effect it. The Hourglass is still used today as kitchen and egg timers.

Mechanical clocks came next. They used weights to turn the gears and the hands. They had to be put in tall towers so the weights could fall longer then a day. Some are still working today.

These clocks had been very accurate at the time. Though today’s standards, losing two hours is a lot. Some of these clocks still work today.

The next mechanical clock was the pendulum clock. This clock used a weight that moved side to side and not just up and down. It is famed for making a tic and tock sound. The pendulum clock kept accurate as long as the pendulum itself was reset before it stopped moving.

Clocks are going to continue to become more accurate and powerful as time goes on.
