Business Tips for a Recession

It can be very hard for small businesses to survive in a recession economy.  Unlike the big banks, government is not looking to bail you out anytime soon, even though small businesses are what drives employment.  If you own a business you will have to find ways to survive on your own.  Here are some survival business tips for a recession.

Owning a business is more than just another financial investment strategy and another asset allocation for your portfolio.  It’s something that you own and are vested in emotionally and you can’t just divest of it because of a bad market.  So here are some ways to survive this time.

First of all, look very closely at your costs and make sure those costs are giving you a return.  Look especially in personnel because if you have employees, this is probably one of your highest cost structures.  It’s not an easy thing to do, but you have to make sure each employee is providing enough return to pay for themselves.

Next, look for ways to generate revenue.  That might mean hiring a sales rep.  Even in a recession, if you can find a sales person who can produce, they will pay for themselves and then some.  If you get an inside sales rep, you can managed them and make sure they are doing their job.  Just make sure you have a working sales model before you do that.  Some sales reps will even work for commission only.  In that case, you would have nothing to lose.

Consider expanding your services or product line.  If you’ve been in business for a while, you probably have a book of clients.  Raise the value of your client portfolio by adding new services or products that you can up-sell to customers who already know you and trust you.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.  An economic recession is a good time to prune some fat that might have needed to go anyway.

Finding a job doesn’t have to be so impossible. However, building a good resume, sending your resume to the right people, keeping track of job offers can be very confusing if you don’t use any sort of expert help. This is where the multitude of job search websites comes in.

In the good old’ days finding a job was not as easy as it is today. You trudged to every firm, handing them your fragile-paper resumes and had no guarantee that the right person would view it, call you back etc. And you had to scour the newspapers each day looking for that one coveted job offer that would in no time be snapped up by millions like you. However, you will see a different scenario now. The strength of your resume of course is a whole different issue. But if you have a strong-enough resume that’s where all your worries end. You just log into a job search website, create a profile, including all the details on your resume, and tell them what kind of a job you want.

All the available positions are listed on a job search website. They tell you about the companies that are looking for people like you, the salary that comes with each position, the number of other people competing for this job etc. They match your resume with the perfect job offer, and voila, your search for a job is over!
When entering you details on a job search engine, knowing what you want always helps. Giving very general inputs such as a huge salary range, a large number of preferred cities etc. will ensure that you’ll spend a few hours just sifting through the many results. Instead, systematically evaluate yourself, your preferences (locations, timings etc.) and then enter the details into the search engine. This will make the results much more specific and you’ll be much more likely to find the perfect job.

The most important entry you make in the job search engine will of course be the field you wish to find a job in. This is slightly dicey because by choosing one particular field you’re blocking all other jobs from similar fields that might suit you. Hence if your field is ‘logistics’ also enter your profile into the ‘industrial’ field. This will widen your job options and ensure your job search has a higher success rate.

Also, don’t rely completely on job search engines. It is advisable to get listed with some job search agencies or recruitment agencies that go about dispensing jobs the traditional way. This is sufficient back-up for the resumes you might have sent in with a job search engine. The added advantage is that many recruitment agencies now have websites where you can get listed with minimum of trouble.

The process then works as follows- your details are followed to the recruitment divisions of the companies that have jobs to match your profile. These companies will then onwards, take the responsibility of contacting you and calling you in for an interview. The whole process is streamlined by these job search engines. You should feel very lucky that you are alive and looking for a job in the 21st century where finding a job has become a matter of a couple of clicks.
