What Are Bowie Knife Handles Made Out Of?

December 9th, 2009 No comments

Choosing a bowie knife will require that you make several choices. You’ll have the choice of blade length, and even blade style. For instance, you might opt for the classic style blade, or you might go for an option that is derived from modern military designs. You will also need to choose from a wide selection of handle materials. What are bowie knife handles made of? What options do you have in the market? You’ll find that quite a few different materials are used for this purpose.

Wood – Wood is the traditional choice for bowie knife handles. You might find that the knife you like offers a solid wood handle, though most feature two wood “scales” or halves joined with rivets and other hardware. The hardware might be made of brass, silver or steel, depending on the model that you choose. Some popular woods used for bowie knife handles include walnut, cocobolo, oak and much more.Wood can be shaped easily, so that it has any type of style desired, or it can be made to resemble other materials.

Another type of material that you can choose for your bowie knife handle is wood. This is probably the most popular type of material used, as it’s inexpensive, widely available and stunningly beautiful. Wood can be carved and shaped, patterned, stained any number of colors and can provide a unique handle for your bowie knife. You will also find any number of different types of wood available in these knives, giving you the greatest range of options possible.

Yet another material used for bowie knife handles is bone. You’ll find antler and other bones used to create these handles, though these are often very decorative. While bone handles are quite functional, you might find that you don’t want to take the knife out to use it. As a note, some bone is unsuitable for handle construction, though antler is often a great choice that will provide years of use, as well as considerable good looks.

You should ensure that the knife you purchase has a full tang, rather than a rattail tang, as this provides better durability and solidity for your knife. You should also ensure that the bowie knife that you choose features a good grip – slick handles will betray you in the end and can lead to injury quite easily.

Carp Fishing Guidelines

As frustrating as it might be, carp fishing is tremendous. Carp are especially good at sucking in and blowing out dubious baits. It’s such an exciting moment to see the whole action in a fraction of a second as you wait with baited breath to see if the fish will accept the bait

Carp gladly feed on the surface of the water so long as you keep the pellets, biscuits, chic peas, bread, and re-hydrated corn coming and these are inexpensive baits too. Just affix the bait to the hooks: I think bread works the best. First soften the biscuits by dipping them in the water for about 2 minutes, then, place them in a sealed, plastic sandwich bag for about an hour. Seeing as different makes have dissimilar textures, you will just have to carry out trials to discover which sort is firm enough to cast. An additional method to hook bait is by super gluing the pellet onto the shank of the hook.

Once they get into feeding, let them feel comfortable around the bait. This provides more prospects for the angler since they will become less choosy. This tactic can be particularly practical for zig rigs.

Once they’re feeding, cast the bait but make sure not to cast the bait directly onto the feeding carp. Cast away from the feeding spot then slowly draw the bait into position. While the bait is still hanging, keep the food coming in so as to deter the carp from leaving.

How to Set-Up Your Rig?

1 Use a hair rig to increase your chance of catching fish. Since carp taste their food first, they won’t feed if they don?t like the taste. 2 You may also use a Spider Line, 50 lbs breaking strain, then use a leader that suits the situation. ? Thread the bait on the baiting needle and hook the hair loop. You might also use foam rubber dipped in a flavor in order to enhance the attractiveness of the bait. 3 You could also make a baiting needle by just straightening a long shank hook. Then slide the bait on the shank, and then slip the bait from the needle onto the hair. 4 Using a float is also an help because it adds weight in order to be able to cast farther, you will also be able to see where the bait is. 5 Don’t forget the controller float rig. A leader can be attached to the swivel on the mainline. It ought to be at least 3 feet in length with a 10lbs Drennan double strength. A low diameter mono will do, just so long as it floats well enough to be seen.

As experts say, it is not the bait that catches carp but the way in which the bait is introduced. Pre-bait everyday, in one spot for a few days. This encourages the carp to think that there is a repeated source of food for them and by ?word of mouth? there?ll soon be a shoal of fish around. Just be patient and it will all work out just dandy.

Going to Costa Rica? Take A Costa Rica Fishing Vacation

November 27th, 2009 No comments

Ah, winter! Shoveling snow ’til your back aches, runny noses, and depressing weather. Already tired of being stuck in your own house? Imagine trading your boots and mitts for shorts and suntan lotion, hopping a jet and being out on a boat angling in crystal waters wondering how the other half is living. Suddenly, your rod bends nearly in half and the battle is on. If this sounds exciting to you, a Costa Rica fishing vacation could be something for you!

Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Six hours of fishing for three-and-a-half minutes of fun. Now, compare that with catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the awesome marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!

On the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica, two of the favorite fishing centers are Tamarindo and Flamingo, both of which are along its famed Gold Coast. Sailfish are available here year round but the peak season is May through August. Want to try your hand at tuna fishing? Try your luck between August to October. You can often find large schools of tuna from 40 to 400 pounds. If roosterfish are your interest, visit the Bay of Papagayo around November to March, staying near the shorelines. Depending on the time of year, you also might hook wahoo, marlin, or the shimmering dorado. And, for a terrific experience, consider renting an ocean kayak.

If you want to fish for billfish, the beautiful is where you want to be. Between December to April, travel to Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina for a guided charter to test your skills in deep offshore waters for battling marlin and sailfish. Sometimes, you will also find tuna and other fish as well. The colorful dorado fish can be caught from May through October. If you fish closer to shore, you can expect to find wahoo, roosters, snapper, and snook.

Golfo Dulce, Drake Bay, and Puerto Jiminez are three places to consider when fishing along the South Pacific coast off the incomparable Osa Peninsula. When the waters are warmer, you have a great chance at hooking marlin or sails. For the best inland fishing in the country, go to the Golfo Dulce area. It is heaven for many kinds of fish because of its rocky bottom and many coves. You will find barracuda, grouper, delicious sea bass, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, and roosterfish here. Bring your camera!

On the Atlantic coast, you will find the world-famous Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado fishing centers up to the Nicaragua border. The seas here can be very choppy but on a day where the waters are flat, this is fishing paradise! From/Between May to November, the valuable tarpon fish is plentiful here, and they can attain weights of to 150 pounds. If you are very fortunate, you might land a rare Atlantic sail. This is also a great place for large snook. Jack Crevalle, guapote, giant grouper, and tripletail can also be caught here. And, be sure to visit the world famous green sea turtle nesting beaches at Tortuguero.

If you want to get out of the office, a Costa Rica fishing trip may be just what will put your soul at rest! There are many Costa Rica vacation packages available online for sportfishing. With dozens of fishing world fishing records to its credit, Costa Rica is said to have the best ocean fishing in the world. See for yourself. Pura Vida!!!
