Creative Writing – Beating Writer’s Block

January 2nd, 2010 No comments

Creative writing as a career may not be fulfilling for some. But for those who have the passion, they do achieve a sense of fulfillment, one way or the other. However, in every creative writer’s career, there will always come a time when one will experience writer’s block. It is the condition wherein one loses the ability to create new work, mainly due to distraction or running out of inspiration. Now if you happen to experience this yourself, you might want to consider these helpful tips to deal with writer’s block.

1. Perform a variety of creative writing exercises. These may include random stimulation and starting phrases. So how is random stimulation done? Simple. Just pick two or three random words and put them together. Again, pick another batch of random words and place them side by side. Repeat this for several times and later as you go along, you will notice that your urge to write is coming back little by little. As for starting phrases, some examples that you can use are I am not and I would like to. From there, see where the phrases will lead you.

2. Think of creative writing more as your bread and butter and less as an art. It is one effective way to get you going since at the end of the day, it means income. So, when you’re running out of inspiration, just remember that you are like any other worker, only that you use vocabulary and grammar to earn a living.

3. Determine the issues behind your writer’s block. Are you experiencing physical, emotional, or financial problem? Do you feel burned out or stressed from writing? Or are you compelled to write more than you usually do? All these you need to address by writing about them or talking to a friend so you will know exactly how to overcome them.

4. Look for a comfortable writing space. It does help. If your workstation seems to be so crowded now, then it’s high time you do some organizing. Or if not, you might want some change in atmosphere, so write in a coffee shop instead. This step will sure help a lot for you to avoid making your crowded workstation as an excuse not to write.

5. Remember why you choose creative writing as a career in the first place. If you choose it because you love doing it and that you are happy with it, then that passion and joy will sustain you not only through writer’s block but all throughout your career.

So don’t let writer’s block get the fun out of your creative writing career. Just remember these tips and you’ll get back to writing in no time.
