Shutters and Blinds: What Are The Differences?

November 26th, 2009 No comments

New homes have bare windows and the new homeowners always have to figure out what kind of window dressings they want. Most people go right out and order blinds but more and more are discovering they like shutters more. Shutters can do a similar job to blinds but in many cases provide more beauty to a room than blinds can.

While interior shutters are often more expensive than blinds, in most cases they are more elegant looking. Blinds still remain the obvious choice for most people but as more people are exposed to shutters, they realize there is a difficult choice to be made. So many houses have plain blinds on them that if you choose interior shutters instead, your house will stand out from the others.

In a kitchen, caf shutters work great as they let the much-needed light in from the top of the window while providing the privacy you need at eye level. This is why many people opt for a combination of shutters and blinds in their homes. The most common split would be to have decorative shutters on the main floor of the house with blinds in the bedrooms upstairs where there is less need to be fancy. One thing is for sure; interior shutters provide you with a window covering option that should be considered when you buy your new house.

Another option is plantation shutters that will also add more elegance to your home than blinds can. People put in plantation shutters as an alternative to blinds because they look classier than blinds. Folks are discovering that shutters add more style to the home than most kinds of blinds and they do pretty much the same thing.

If you want cheap plantation shutters, you should do some searching online to find where you can get the best price. Looking online for shutter will reveal that there are many different web sites that sell shutters and will have them shipped to your door. If you don’t want to order them over the Internet then your options will be more limited and you will have to see what you can find in your local area. Ordering them online will mean you have to install them yourself so if you want someone else to do it, your best choice is to buy them from a local store in your area.

Find A Good Cordless Drill With These Tips

November 23rd, 2009 No comments

A variety of factors go into assessing cordless drills. Because of the many factors, it can be hard to determine which one is the best cordless drill. We’re going to begin with the most fundamental factor.

Build Quality/Drill Strength

“Build quality” is defined as how well made the drill is and how long it will last with vigorous use. Extended use of a drill that doesn’t contain a quality motor can cause it to “burn up”. Additionally, the drill’s clutch, will produces different torque intensity, can begin to malfunction. Drills also contain parts and/or switches that must function properly.

Just holding a drill in your hand can often provide some clue as to its build quality. If the drill looks inexpensive, it probably is. In my opinion, online reviews by experienced users are the best way to determine the build quality of a drill.

Build quality will disclose itself in time and with the resources of the internet you can reap the benefit of other people’s experience.

Drill Characteristics

The best electric drill is one that meets your individual needs, and does not necessarily have all the newest technology. One of the basic features needs to be a keyless chuck, which prevents the need for an extra tool to change bits. Another essential feature for a cordless drill is a quality keyless chuck, because it is important that the bit not slip while you are using the drill.

A clutch is another important feature for a cordless drill. Because it’s essential not to strip screws by too much torque, the clutch on the cordless drill prevents this from happening. The majority of drills today contain a clutch. Another important characteristic is a variable speed feature. This feature provides the flexibility of determining the specific speed and torque combination needed for a particular job.

An additional feature that has been found in newer drills is an LED light. This is very convenient when working in poor light. But this is a luxury, not a necessity.

Interested In A Metal Cutting Saw? Read This

November 23rd, 2009 No comments

When I first saw the Panasonic EY3530 Metal Cutting Saw, I thought it looked good but probably wouldn’t be practical on the job. But I was wrong. Go to any construction job and you’ll nearly all of the tradesmen using cordless metal cutting saws.

So, what is a metal cutting saw?

A cordless metal cutting saw is a circular saw which spins a metal blade tipped in carbide at a specific RPM. Usually, this kind of saw will include a guard to prevent metal shavings from flying into the air. You can cut through mild steel with these saws, and the cuts will be cool and clean. In fact, one of the best stories involves a salesman entering the offices of a potential customer, revving up the saw and cutting straight through a threaded rod and threading on a nut – all prior to this customer kicking him out of his office. This, as it turns out, was a very effective sales technique in many instances.

So what can these saws cut?

For the most part, any mild steel such as threaded rod, unit-strut, metal siding, EMT pipe, and duct work. The saws also come with blades that can cut aluminum. I’ve heard these saws can be used to cut copper, but I don’t know if that’s advisable. Most people use them to cut threaded rod, strut, and EMT. If your work involves cutting mostly thin metal, you can buy blades that have extra teeth, which give a finer cut.

Who makes these saws?

Easily the most popular is the Panasonic EY3530 Metal Cutting Saw, but there are other brands you may prefer, like DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, and more. For those of you who already own a cordless circular saw, you may want to consider buying carbide tipped blades. A big supplier of these blades is Tenyru. That said, I still have to believe that it’s best to use the tools that were designed for specific jobs, especially when it comes to metal cutters. But a lot of my Bosch customers tell me they really like the results of a carbide tipped metal blade on their saw. So you may want to try them out.

You can usually return cordless power tools within 30 days, no questions asked. I tell all my customers about this policy, but none of them have ever returned a tool. You should try out the Panasonic EY33530 Metal Cutting Saw.
