February 12th, 2010 No comments

The craft of sash window replacement is often found in the type of carpentry known as joinery. Joiners are often builders of tables and cabinets as well as any type of intricate joining of wood such as a sash might entail. Another type of carpenter that may be knowledgeable about sash building is an architectural timbering carpenter.

If you have a lot of replacement that needs to be done on your windows and you would like to maintain the integrity of the design of them you could consider looking for someone who is a master cabinet maker. Older homes have unusual shapes and sizes in their windows and these could be replicated by a master carpenter who specializes in cabinets.

With modern resin-based material a master joiner could recreate the beauty your windows once held, the windows you might have thought were beyond repair. Using traditional old world joinery fused with modern techniques you will end up with beautiful results.

Find a joiner who is good with detail and perhaps is listed as a decorative arts carpenter. If your windows are from a period where a lot of detail work is added to the windows and perhaps through time some of it has been lost it can be recreated with modern techniques.

Knowing that a company specializes in replacing sash windows is the best choice as you can count on the fact that they will be thorough, efficient and cost you less money as they will know exactly what needs to be done. Call upon a custom cabinetry shop to find an artisan carpenter who will be well trained in the fine art of old world joinery fused with new age tools and products. These types of artisans will probably be well versed in sash building.

What Are The Benefits Of Chimney Flashing

February 11th, 2010 No comments

Whenever various kinds of materials especially thin sheets of metal is used to block water from entering a building its called flashing. The principle behind flashing is simple, water will always flow in a certain direction depending on the gravitational pull, so flashing is used to break the surface tension thereby stopping the water and redirecting it in a another direction.

Flashing can be concealed or exposed depending upon the situation. If you are going to expose the flashing it is best to use metals such as, galvanized steel, copper, lead and aluminum. When metal is selected it should be researched as to what its properties are, such as will it corrode, because of materials near it and whether expansion joints need to be used.

As mentioned above there are several different types of metal that flashing can be made from. Galvanized steel, aluminum and lead are the most common ones. Copper is also used but it is much more expensive than the others so it is considered to be a high end metal. The advantage of aluminum is that like lead it will last a long time and is relatively cheap. The cheapest material is galvanized steel but it will only last around 20- 30years.

The purpose of all types of flashing is the same, to prevent water flowing into the building at a specific area. The different types are described below (a )Roof flashing; this type prevents water from going into the house from where ever the roof might meet an obstacle like a pipe or chimney. (b) Wall flashing; this type of flashing prevents the water from coming from outside and into the house. (c) Sill flashing; this type of flashing prevents water from coming under the window sills and door frames. (d) Base flashing; this type of flashing prevents water from entering from where the roof meets the wall.

Every chimney of a house is different from the next one. That is why installing Chimney Flashing is considered to be a custom job. Each time it is done the metal has to be molded differently to suit the house. That means if you are confident that you can do it your self plan such things such as if you are comfortable on a tall ladder or if you are comfortable working on a roof top. Other wise its better to go with a professional.

Traveling And Your Laptop Case

February 10th, 2010 No comments

My job requires that I spend a lot of time tra it’s important for me to have a lightweight computer bag that allows provides durability. I spend more time in airplanes and airports then I do in the office, so easy access to my laptop and compartments were important. Here are some important “must haves” that helped me make my choice.

A priority for me first and foremost was a bag with wheels. Over the years, I have learned that shoulder bags and backpacks are hard on my neck and back. I always travel with files and folders so I needed something that would accommodate these things.

Being a frequent flyer as I have been for many years, I have learned what is going to make my flying experience easier. Having pockets in the exterior portions of my computer bag make easy access to keys, wallet and passport. Easy loading and unloading of my laptop has to be a priority with checkpoints like they are in today’s airports.

When I thing about the amount of money I have spent on my laptop, I was not going to skimp on cost when I purchased my case. There was everything from hard cases, collapsible soft cases and even a case that was waterproof. Wow, this was going to be tricky, how about a combination of all three?

With so many different options in computer cases available, I narrowed it down to the most useful case that would protect my computer best. I knew what I didn’t want so that should help right? Side opening or top opening, protective sleeve or not?

Being a seasoned traveler as I am, I had one final requirement for my computer bag. It had to have space for a quick change of clothes. It only takes one time arriving to your final destination and finding your suitcase didn’t to make this important to you as well so heed my warning!

Your carryon computer bag should be able to hold your valuables as well. I have had my checked luggage searched more times than not and believe me, that’s not the place for your valuable possessions. My computer bag is with me at all times and that’s where you valuable should be as well.

When you travel, as much as I do, you want o make sure you are not caught without the necessities. A hard-sided laptop case adds extra protection to my laptop, but also provides a little extra space for everything I need. I arrive fully prepared to start my business trip off on the right foot.

With the continued threats we are facing as a nation striving for peace; strip searches could be in our future. However, that’s fine with me, as long as I get to take my computer bag with me on the place. Traveling is how I spend my working days, and for me I’d rather be safe than sorry.
