Cuckoo Clocks

January 27th, 2010 No comments

The quirky and irreplaceable cuckoo clock is a design that seems pulled right out of childhood imagination. Its whimsical carvings, flapping wings, and almost comical chirpings delight many of us even today. It seems a design that has not been lost to the modern era of sleek fashions and “less is more” styles.

The cuckoo clock as it is generally thought of is a descendant of Black Forest designs. The Black Forest is a region in Germany that is rich in culture and skills of days gone by. Thats right the cuckoo clock was popularized in Germany not Switzerland as many Americans falsely believe. But even the Black Forest designs were descendants of earlier versions of this charming clock. It seems that people have always had a desire for humor and whimsy!

Singing clocks like the cuckoo clock have been dated to as far back as the sixteen hundreds. Some versions are even believed to have been built prior to these! Sadly over time they have been lost or destroyed leaving only some drawings behind. The earliest versions of the cuckoo clock were a simple design to help keep costs low. They were flat paneled with painted dials and two small doors for the bird to crow from. As time went on and cost came down they were detailed more and more to resemble Victorian period furnishings. This is the most commonly thought of style today.

The Swiss also developed their own twists to the clock. When we think of the cartoon clocks of modern generations this seems to be there styling. It is a shame that the glory of a finely detailed wall clock such as this was diminished through the years but many still see the value in them. These versions were made in stunning detail and were meant to replicate the cottages of Switzerland. The Germans actually enjoyed this idea so much that they started designing their clocks this way also. One last feature that the Swiss can take credit for is the addition of the music box into the clock. This surely has brought joy into many homes!

Modern cuckoo clocks are of course a far less hand built and quality product for the most part. Alas they have almost been exclusively delegated to the ranks of tourist traps. They are still as quirky as ever though and can now be bought at cheap prices and with a much greater variety then times of past. Indeed if you are looking for an individual statement nothing will bring greater character and individuality then a Cuckoo Clock!

Getting A Pendulum Wall Clock Online

December 23rd, 2009 No comments

Since the turn of the Millennium, all things old seem to have been given a new license for life: the music, hairstyles, movies and even the household decorations are emulating past styles. If you’re interested in giving your home a realistic antique look, then stop looking for that special something and start peeking at pendulum wall clocks. They bring elegance and tradition together in a fresh retro way.

These antique clocks can be bought at pretty much any furniture store, and even more online websites. There are many designs you can look at to find the one that’s perfect for your home. If you’ve got one in your family already, then take a look at all the companies offering restoration treatments for the antique in your life.

One way to buy a pendulum wall clock for a great price is to buy online. The central benefit to purchasing from an online retailer is without question the price of the products. Online retailers will whoop storefront vendors every time, at least in price.

The issue here is that certain online retailers are a warehouse and that’s it — there’s no room for good customer support after or even before a sale.

The other positive thing about ordering online is that the choices you have available to you are mindboggling. Check out as many sites as you have the patience for and check one price against another. By taking it slow at this stage, you’re ensuring a great deal regardless of what you ultimately buy. Many sites offer pictures your clock, too.

Most antiques are, by nature, second hand, which must be taken into consideration as well. The picture, from this angle, and from this distance away, looks great and there’s no reason to think anyone would doctor an image so it looks better than it really is. The trouble is when it comes to the other sides of your clock – it’s hard to tell if it’s really in mint condition without examining it in person.

Do your homework before you even consider buying anything from an online vendor, particularly antique items like a pendulum wall clock. Find a vendor who has been around for years, someone that has proven to be reliable and relatively honest. Check their site to make sure they mention what condition your clock is in before you buy.

Also find out how the vendor can help you in case the clock is broken or damaged upon delivery. Are they willing to offer at least a small guarantee that the product will arrive safe and sound?

Will they allow you to purchase a guarantee or insurance of some kind to make sure your product will be safe and snug when it arrives? Go with the vendor that offers the most support to you, not the one with the cheapest price.

Pendulum wall clocks are beautiful additions to any home and will add an antique flavor to an otherwise boring room. By being careful and selective about who you’re doing business with, you’ll be sure to purchase a pendulum wall clock perfect for your home.

By matching good prices with customer support that will help in the event of trouble, you’ll pick a great conversation piece that will keep time and look great for years to come.

Antique wall clocks are generally classy enhancements to any room. If you’re looking for an antique feel, perhaps buy a beatiful chiming mantle clock for yourself today? Remember to buy only from trusted vendors for the finest quality of pendulum wall clocks.
