Acoustic Guitar Lesson: Things You should Be Practicing

February 11th, 2010 No comments

In this acoustic guitar lesson I would like to talk about your practice and how you should be spending this precious time alone with your instrument.

30 Minutes a day is the minimum amount of time you would need for your practice time and you also need to divide it into suitable sections to make the most of your practice time. You know the saying: “If you fail to plan you plan to fail” This is so true when it comes to practicing guitar and actually want to see results. I like to mess around on the guitar just like everybody else but I also understand that if I always play the same thing then I’m not going to grow as a guitarist.

This is not set in stone but I have seen awesome results from my students who followed this schedule.

1. 5 minutes is devoted to chords. Don’t learn all the chords at once. Instead start with two or three and make sure you get the changes perfect.

2. 5 minutes working on rhythm playing. Once again start with 1 or 2 rhythms and get them as tight as possible. Use a metronome as soon as possible.

3. Spend 10 minutes working on songs. You should have some chords and rhythms down and now you can use them to play some easy guitar songs.

4. Scales and Chromatic exercises are extremely help to facilitate your two hands synchronization. Remember to slow down the parts and master the movements.

5. The next 3 minutes is devoted to ear training. Developing your aural skills is super important and it could start as simple as telling the difference between Major and Minor chords.

6. Spend the remainder of your practice time jamming and play whatever it is you fancy! Make sure to end your practice time on a high note and never put your guitar away without playing something that’s fun.

That’s all for this acoustic guitar lesson. This kind of focus, dedication and commitment will ensure that you grow daily as a musician and it’s guaranteed to turn you into an awesome guitar player in the shortest time possible. FACT!
