Do I Repair Or Replace Roller Shades?

Roller shades are a popular window treatment. After several years the window shades may start to show signs of their age. At that time is it better to replace or repair those old shades?

While your window shades may still be beautiful and enchanting, as time passes, they do begin to show the signs of wear. The fabric fades in the sun. The control mechanism may not be working properly. Fabric may be torn. All of these affect the appearance of your shades. You are then faced with the decision of replacing the shade with a new one or repairing the existing shade.

For many of the older window shades, the problem is in the mechanism itself. Shades can be stuck closed or at the half-way point. Sometimes it is possible to tighten the spring to get the shade working correctly, but if the shade is stuck, then trying to correct this may actually end up tearing the fabric. This will force you to replace all the shades in order to keep the matching. Repair parts are no longer produced for many of the older shades, so repair may not be an option. Instead, many of the owners choose to replace old shades with newer ones.

Sometimes you may be able to replace the entire mechanical portion of the older shade; however remember that you are still going to have the old material for the shade its self. Sometimes you will pay more for the replacement mechanism than you would pay for the complete new shade. In addition, you may buy the new mechanism and in the process of attaching the old shade material to it find that the material has deteriorated farther than you had thought.

If the fabric or material of your older window shades has ripped or torn, there is little you can do to repair the rip so that it does not destroy the look of the shade. If the mechanism is still in good shape, you may be able to replace the material with new fabric however. This will allow you to use somewhat heavier fabric like the newer shades use. This is much easier than attempting repair of the lightweight fabrics.

If the hem bar was not trimmed correctly, it can often cause damage to the window frame or the wall. The bar can easily be trimmed using a saw. Friction from the bar may mar the paint of either the wall or the window frame, so be sure that it is fitting correctly.

While many users of roller shades may be tempted to attempt repairs, most of the time it will save the user more money to replace the existing roller shades rather than to attempt to repair the old ones. The shades that are now available will provide more functionality and beauty for the owner of the shades.

Replace your older roller shades with new ones in order to keep your home looking fresh and elegant. You will find that the new shades are far more functional than the old ones.
