Living Room Improvement For Less Than $500

Because the living room is usually the highlight of a house, there is more need for effort and investment in decorating this space. After all, we entertain guests in this room so it must be pleasing and comfortable enough to draw positive impressions. The good news is that we can still beautify our living room for less than $500.

Spice up the room not by changing everything but by adding one or two key pieces. Ideally, furniture gives an instant transformation. However, if space is an issue, it can be an artwork, collection, big decorations or even a new area rug.

Mind the color scheme. If your living room is in a neutral color like beige or tan, you’re halfway done to coordinating the room’s look, as neutral colors are very easy to match. On the other hand, if your living room is in a different color or a dominant hue is conspicuous on a large furniture, make that as your central point and work your decorating around it.

One excellent option is to add a black leather chair to the furniture mix, no matter what color scheme you’re using. A piece like this needn’t be expensive, either. Even discount “big box” stores offer leather club chairs for as little as $300. That seems like a big chunk out of a $500 budget, but think of it as an investment rather than an expense. A chair such as this combines both classic and modern styling, making it a good upgrade choice now and a compatible accessory as you continue to add new pieces.

Another furniture worth having, especially with the black leather chair is a white coffee table. If you already have a coffee table, then perhaps it’s time to replace it with something new and trendy. $50 will already buy you a nice table. Accent the chair or even your couch with throws in black and white and the look is just amazingly classic!

Don’t go overboard with the black-and-white theme, though. Even something as high contrast as this interesting combination can get boring over time. Again, use the dominant color of the furniture you’re keeping as your starting point and either coordinate or contrast with it. If you’re uncertain about how to do this, search online for images of the “color wheel” or “color circle.” These images will show you what colors complement one another. With a little research, you can come up with a color scheme to make your living room both interesting and comfortable at the same time.

Now think about more light to highlight the new colors in your room. If you have an overhead light fixture, it’s both relatively simple and inexpensive to change out the fixture. Consider something that has moveable pieces, such as a lamp with three or four spotlights. That way you can change the direction of the lighting depending on what you want to lighten up. Fixtures such as this can cost as little as $30.

Finally, consider a simple change in curtains for the windows and area rugs for the floors. Tab curtains are easy to install and offer a more masculine line if you’re a guy redoing his apartment and area rugs can just be thrown on the floor in a second. Curtains and rugs add texture to the room and are available in a wide range of prices.
