If you are planning a big home improvement project that you are going to need to hire a contractor for, there are a few things that you will need to know before you even consider hiring them for your own home improvement project.

First of all you need to be sure that you ask the contractor for references about any past projects that they have done that are similar to the project you are hiring them for. This will give you a good idea on how good they are at the work that they do. If they are not able to supply you with these references then chances are they are not a reputable company. Every reputable contractor will have some type of references. They should also be able to provide you with a portfolio of past projects that they have done.

You need to also be sure that the contractor is insured and licensed in your particular area. This will help you avoid any potential problems that may occur during the course of your home improvement project. Also when you follow the city ordinances it will save you both time and money. You need to avoid anyone that cannot provide you with a current license or proof of insurance or cannot provide you with any proof at all.

Also be sure that you ask the contractor create a plan for you on how they are planning completing the home improvement project for you. This will help you avoid future problems that may arise during the process. Your contractor may have a better way to complete the project in less time and money then you may have originally planned for. If they are unable to provide you with their plan then they are a fly by night company and once again you need to be sure that you are not doing business with them.

The next thing that you need to ask the contractor for is a guarantee in writing for any work that they are doing for you. Knowing the type of guarantee that they are willing to offer you is a very important step. If you are able to get your guarantee in writing you need to begin looking for a new contractor. Just like them being insured, this guarantee in writing will protect both of you, and will put your minds at ease. The more communication, the better!

Finally you should be sure that you are choosing a contractor that has a good reputation in the area. Talk to people who have used this contractor before. Did they like the work they did? Did they feel satisfied with the level of communication that went on? What about the completion time? Those contractors who have good reputations are the types of contractors that will be able to provide you with the type of quality that you are seeking in your home improvement project.

Finding a contractor for your own home improvement project can seem to be a daunting task, but if you take the time to follow these simple tips you will have a great contractor that will be able to deliver beautiful results for you.
