Common Stomach Problems and Their Treatments

Everyone knows someone who suffers from an occasional bout of nausea, heartburn or even diarrhea. And all of us, at one time of another, have suffered these stomach problems ourselves. Heartburn after a dinner with spicy foods isn’t surprising, or nausea after a lunch that came with rich, buttery sauces isn’t uncommon. However, sometimes this minor bout of nausea can be a sign of something more severe, and that burning sensation you think is heartburn might actually be something more severe and more dangerous.

Diarrhea is a problem with loose, watery stools that sends you flying to the bathroom, often at the most inopportune times. It can be caused by food poisoning, or bacterial infections such as e-coli. If you are lactose intolerant you may also feel the unpleasant results of enjoying those dairy products. More serious issues that cause these stomach problems are Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

In the case of food poisoning or bacterial infections, your symptoms will usually lessen by consuming only a clear liquid diet within 24 hours. Drink as much fluid as you can because dehydration can be a real concern. To avoid this problem in the first place, always practice good food safety habits in the kitchen, insist on well-cooked food, and return food that is served to you looking as though it has been sitting out for some time, especially if mayonnaise is involved. If mucous or blood shows in your stools, consult a doctor immediately.

Nausea and vomiting can also leave you dehydrated, especially for severe bouts. These stomach problems can be caused by a great many things ranging from pregnancy, food poisoning and motion sickness. Sometimes they may be symptoms of something more severe, like head injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning or an adverse reaction to a new medication. You can try taking vitamin B6 or ginger supplements to help with the queasiness. If your nausea continues, or you find yourself vomiting often, please speak with your doctor.

Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation that lodges in your chest, and severe cases can often be mistaken for a heart attack. If your condition doesn’t respond to OTC acid buffers or H2 blockers prescribed by your doctor, let him know at once. In order to lessen the severity of acid reflux attacks, you should cut back on your carbonated drinks and smoking. You should also change your diet, avoiding coffee, fatty foods, whole milk and even chocolate to keep from suffering from these painful stomach problems.

Almost every stomach problem can be affected to some extent by a simple change in your diet, but stomach problems that linger or do not respond to medication should be brought to your doctor’s attention.

If not attended properly, stomach problems can be a serious treat to your health. Make sure you know the right stomach problems treatments to avoid more complications.
