Ignoring PR0 Directories – Webmaster Follies

December 26th, 2009 No comments

So you want to become a webmaster? Webmastering is a complex job with more to it that one would expect. There are many different skill sets which are required to run a successful website, from writing content to designing graphics, or marketing the content on your website.

If you look at the top left of the page for analysis of a particular site you will see a table of “top search queries”. Unlike the stats in your Awstats program in cPanel, these queries show the key phrases and their ranking or position according to the Google robot.

Next thing I knew, I was actually doing it! I still have a huge smile on my face whenever I remember the moment when I typed my domain name into the browser window for the first time and there it was: my first ever website, just the way I wanted it. How in the world did the Faster Webmaster manage to turn techno-phobic old me into a web enthusiast? Here’s how: For starters, he provided (and continues to provide) access to a membership site (for a one-time fee), where the course with an ever-growing stash of supplementary resources is located.

This can help save you time and money, as you can hire someone who is more knowledgeable than you in order to get the website online and keep it online. While outsourcing is definitely an option, if you’ll be running a website for any length of time, its wise to at least familiarize yourself with coding languages and backend databases such as PHP and MySQL. Learning basic HTML and CSS will also be a huge advantage.

By learning the languages and being able to code your own websites, you’ll lessen your reliance on others, meaning you’ll have a smaller overhead cost and can get things done at your pace and to your liking. While being webmaster doesn’t require you to excel in all of these areas, you should definitely have at least basic knowledge in order to keep your website running. Many webmasters today are self taught, with tons of resources being available on the internet for learning how to use programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Dreamworks, and other programs which are valuable for scripting and creating graphics for your website.

Without too much effort you should be able to nudge your position from page 2 of Google to page 1..all for a word that you may never have considered or targeted. Next time, check your webmaster account and check out that table because you would not know what little gem you will find.

Buying and Selling Web Sites With Little Effort

December 14th, 2009 No comments

Let’s talk about the 800 pound gorilla in the room, the one that you never want to address the one that deals with you not being happy with your job. If you are like most people then you already know deep down that you absolutely hate your job. The constant annoyance of your boss standing over your shoulder. Well I am here to give you good news, I am here to tell you that you can quit that 9 to 5 job and go to work for yourself. How is this possible, well I will tell you all you have to do is go into the business of buying and selling websites and within no time you will be making a comfortable living.

Of course, I’m fully aware that you’re having some serious doubts about the whole idea, and wondering how on Earth anyone can really make money with this business model. Well, rest assured that it is more than just a pipe dream! The internet has grown to encompass more and more of our everyday lives, and website realtors are a reality whose time has come. Best of all, you need but a fraction of the startup costs of a brick and mortar business – just enough to purchase your initial website.

The first step is to locate a website that you can setup for resale. You have a couple of options: 1) purchase a domain name, build a website yourself, and get it hosted; or 2) locate an already-established website that you can buy fro is owner. If you choose the latter option, you might want t look at Site Snipe, which is a service that provide you information on all of the niche domains that are currently available for purchase. For example, you may want to try to market and sell a site centered on stock-car driving Labradors. You simply consult Site Snipe and it provides you with leads on every website for sale that meets that description. While you may later discover better methods for locating prime web real estate, you should seriously consider using this type of service during the initial stages of your website reselling efforts

Once you have determined your niche and actually found a site that focuses on Labradors driving stock cars, you’re probably ready to run out and purchase he site from its owner. Before you do that, however, there is a little bit of research that I want you to do so that you know more about the value of this slice of internet real estate. The information you need to discover includes its page rankings on the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) as well as the site’s potential for successful search engine optimization (SEO). Remember that the goal here is to buy and resell a website that can attract customer traffic – if your site cannot accomplish that goal then no buyer is going to want to take it off your hands.

You will need to ask the site owner for some documentation that shows how much traffic the site has seen in the past. If this information is not able to be obtained then you will want to just do a keyword search for the site on Google. See where it comes up on the site as far as page rank is concerned. If the person does give you documentation as to the traffic make sure that it is legitimate info and not just what they want you to see in order to buy the site.

Now you have bought the site and you now own it outright. Now comes the time to design the site in a way that will make it pleasing to a potential buyer. Now I know you are sitting there and saying that you have no knowledge when it comes to programming and site design. That’s ok you don’t need to remember all the code in the world to have a good looking site. All you need is a little imagination and the desire to take your ideas and apply them to your site. There are several ways that you can design a great looking website and not have to be web savvy in order to make it happen.

The last thing that you will need to do is find a place to host your site. There are several places out there that will host your site with price plans ranging from free to around $30 a month for unlimited services. These are the things that you will need to keep in mind as there are several things to consider when buying and selling of a website. But if you do your homework in the end it will be worth your time and money.
