The 20th Century Tractor Unit
A very basic description of a tractor set up is the tractor engine, which resides in front of the driving position and below the engine compartment where there are 2 steerable wheels. It is a simple design that has existed for a long time without being changed. However, in almost every modern model, you will see the enclosed cabs fitted, keeping in mind the comfort and safety of the operator.
In certain places, heavy and wet soil is found, like in California’s Central Valley. Here the crawler type or caterpillar was quite popular in the 1930s. This was due to better floatation and traction. Generally, they were maneuvered by using turning brake pedals as well as separate track clutches that were operated using levers rather than a steering wheel.
In a few places like California’s Central Valley which has wet or heavy soils, the crawler type or “Caterpillar” became quite popular because of superior floatation and traction. Maneuvering was done by turning brake pedals along with separate track clutches that are operated through levers instead of through the steering wheel.
In the 1960s, the appearance of 4-wheel drive tractors became common. While some of these had the standard configuration of 2 large wheels and 2 small that was typical of small tractors, the others had 4 large powered wheels.
In many areas heavy and wet soil is found, like in California’s Central Valley. Here the crawler type or caterpillar was quite popular and became popular in the 1930s. This was due to a better floatation and traction ability than the normal wheeled tractor offered. Generally, they were maneuvered by using turning brake pedals as well as separate track clutches that were operated using levers rather than a steering wheel.
Non-articulated or articulated tractors that have steerable multi-tracks, replaced “Caterpillar” for usage at the farm. The larger version of modern farm tractors have articulated 4 or 8 wheel drive units including 1 or 2 power units, hinged in the mid section and steered through hydraulic pumps or clutches.
Recent development includes replacement of the steel crawler-type tracks or wheels with flexible rubber tracks that are steel-reinforced. Usually these are either hydrostatic powered or entirely hydraulic driving mechanisms. There exists little resemblance between the configuration of modern tractors and designs of the classic farm tractor.
