Tips For Plumbing Emergencies from Atlanta Plumbers

May 9th, 2010 No comments

As long as we have had indoor plumbing there have been plumbing emergencies arise, and these emergencies are guaranteed to continue far into the future. Knowing what to do in the event of a plumbing emergency could be the difference between a small inconvenience and major damage to your home. Follow these simple tips and be prepared for your next plumbing emergency. These come directly from a pair of Atlanta Plumbers and should be taken very seriously by any consumer looking to inform themselves of the ins and outs of the plumbing business.

It is important to remember to stay calm in the event of a plumbing emergency. Burst pipes and overflowing toilets are going to happen and there is nothing you can do to stop it. The best thing you can do is to stay calm and be aware of what needs to be done to correct the problem.

The first thing you need to do in these types of emergencies is to turn off the water supply. This may be the individual water supply to that particular waterline, or you may have to turn off the water to the entire house. This is very important to be able to minimize the damage created by any flowing water.

Once you have the water under control it is time to to contact your insurance or a company to handle the clean up. If the damage is quite extensive then you will probably need to make a claim with your insurance. Your insurance agent can put you in touch with the proper cleanup company to help you in your situation. If the damage is quite small you may be able to handle the situation on your own. However, in the event of raw sewage being present in the home it is not wise to handle these situations yourself. This could lead to health issues down the road.

Always be prepared for these types of emergencies before they happen. Know where all water shutoffs are in your home, and have the number of your insurance agent in a location where it is easy to find. It is also wise to have the numbers of water damage restoration companies and plumbers handy to get them there as soon as possible.

Steps to More Organic and Sustainable Living

Many of us are concerned about the sustainability of the lives we live. As a species, we humans are consuming resources at a far more rapid rate than the plant can support. We are ruining the oceans through fishing too much and allowing pollution to taint the seas. We are chopping down valuable mangrove swamps, the nurseries of the ocean’s fish, and dynamiting coral reefs.

On land we are using more pesticides and fertilizers than is wise. Soil from unsafe farming practises is lost to erosion, reducing the fertility of our farms. And the air we breath and the food we eat has been poisoned by thousands of different sorts of chemicals that all mix together in our bodies in ways we don’t even begin to understand. As a result of these worries many people are trying to band together for change. Many are also trying to make small changes at home and in their own lives. Many of the changes we can make are simple yet can have a major impact on health. In our household for instance we have switched wherever possible (and affordable) to organic vegetables and fruit. That way I know I’m supporting more sustainable farming methods. I’m also assured that my children are avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals and pesticides while getting their daily fill of nutritious organic vitamins. Other simple changes that we’ve made have including switching to organic products in the bathroom. Our children just love their new organic kids toothpaste and I also really like the taste and feeling of mine. I’m trying to do the same with shampoo. In fact, wherever possible I’m trying to switch to more natural products that have fewer strange chemicals in them.

Some of the other changes we are putting in place including trying to save energy. This should cut down our monthly expenses and also help the planet. Since turning down the thermostat a bit this past winter I’ve found that I have very quickly adapted to the cold and now feel overheated in many people’s homes.

Shopping Tips: Why The Flat Plug Surge Protector Is Best

May 5th, 2010 No comments

Buying a surge protector will be much worth your time. It will protect your electronic devices in the event of a power surge. This appliance routes any additional voltage that results from a surge and sends it to a grounding wire.

When shopping for one of these surge protectors, there are a few important features to look for. Finding a model that offers the most joules, multiple outlets and a compact design are all important.

The flat plug surge protector is really your best option. Flat plug surge protectors are best because they are slim and fit almost right against the wall. This saves you from having to move furniture out farther from the wall to make room for the outlets.

When you are out shopping for one of these devices, look for one that is child-safe. There are outlets that push in when you press on them, so if a child goes to try and stick their finger in a socket they are not able to. This is important if there are children in the home. Even if you try to keep your eyes on them at all times you may not see them doing this so at least you know they will not get shocked. Also, look for one with a lightweight design. This makes it easier to handle and not so bulky.

The perfect accessory is the flat plug surge strip. This handy little cable will help you manage your power as efficiently as possible. It saves space because you can attach one end into the outlet in the wall and the other to the plug from your surge protector. Now you can keep the larger surge protectors underneath your computer desk or entertainment center from being overcrowded with cables and plugs.

The basic surge strip features a flat male 3-prong plug on one end and the female 3-prong plug on the opposite end. You can find them at most computer and electronics stores.
