Polar RCX5 vs Garmin FR610

July 25th, 2011 No comments

Any runner looking for a new running watch will eventually end up choosing between the Polar RCX5 and the Garmin FR 610. Both of these recent releases by Garmin and Polar are impressive enough to cause a stir in the running community so much so that picking a clean winner from these two products is near impossible. Polar RCX5 reviews extol the advantages of the Polar RCX5 and predictably enough, there are also a good number of supporters in the Garmin Forerunner 610 HRM camp. While this review will never be able to pick a clean winner between the two, suffice it to say we’ll try to cover the important aspects of each product so you will learn to differentiate one from the other.

GPS

Every modern running watch has to have a GPS and these two excel in that regard. Polar RCX5 reviews laud the accuracy of the Polar RCX5 but the Garmin FR610 clearly has a leg up in this department. With the Hotfix technology, signal acquisition is reduced to 5 seconds giving you more time on the road and less on the curb.

Advantage: Garmin FR610

Heart Rate Monitor

Polar has long been an industry leader in this department and the Polar RCX5 only served to reinforce this. While the Garmin FR610 has excellent HRM functions, Polar is still king.

Advantage: Polar RCX5

Visual Appearance

Both devices have the clean look that is a significant departure from the traditional bulky look in old designs.

Advantage: Tie

Multi-Sport Readiness

Any of the many Polar RCX5 reviews will tell you that the Polar RCX5 has come a long way from the old Polar designs that were cumbersome enough to limit multi-sport uses. The Garmin FR610, on the other hand, took a small step back in the sense that many users continue to consider the Garmin FR310XT as the golden standard in multi-sport watches. We would rather have the Garmin FR610’s sleeker profile over the bulk of the 310XT but in the long-run, we’d have to say this is a tie.

Advantage: Tie

Home Run Feature

The Garmin Forerunner 610 HRM is a touch screen watch, the first of its kind at this form factor. It even works with a winter glove on so you can continue flicking through your run data even while you’re out in the cold. The Polar RCX5’s answer is the hands-free feature; simply by swiping the watch across your heart rate monitor, the data pages flip to your pre-set views so you can look at all your data without fidgeting with your watch’s buttons. It’s tough to pick a winner but we’re leaning towards the Garmin.

Advantage: Garmin FR610

As you can see, both watches are excellent in their own respects and you can never go wrong with buying one over the other. However, should you have a specific preference, let this review guide you in choosing which watch is the best for you.

After getting pregnant stay healthy

December 24th, 2010 No comments

While most health professionals recommend that pregnant women start a strict health regime before becoming pregnant, that’s not always possible. You may not have thought you would become pregnant, but there you are. Just as soon as that test comes back positive, it’s high time you get serious about your health in every respect. From good sleeping patterns, to lifestyle changes, to optimum nutrition and regular exercise, your work’s cut out for you! Your baby is depending on you! Here we’ve got a few pointers on how to get your state of health in top shape after getting pregnant.

Let’s begin with getting that beauty sleep. After getting pregnant, it’s no longer just a question of looking and feeling your best, it’s now also an essential aspect of your baby’s health. While we usually refer to a regular sleep schedule as ‘beauty’ sleep, after getting pregnant, you need to take a fresh perspective on just what regular sleep does for your body. During sleep, your body rebuilds new tissue, allows you that much needed relaxation and helps you de-stress from the rigors of everyday life. Baby feels the benefits!

Now, here we come to any lifestyle changes you may want to make: if you smoke or drink alcohol, now’s definitely the time to quit! Ask your pediatrician for advice on how best to kick the smoking habit. Abstain from alcohol – it’s well known that consumption of alcoholic beverages can lead to a number of pregnancy complications. As for ‘recreational’ drugs, that’s definitely out! Take stock of your lifestyle and any ‘vices’. Get rid of them. Your baby will thank you for the rest of his or her lifetime.

After getting pregnant, you’ll want a good book on nutrition and pregnancy. Go to your local book shop or online vendor. There are dozens of excellent books on the subject. Look for one that details the benefits of each and every nutrient you consume. Believe me, it will be an eye-opener! Perhaps more than any other single step you can take after getting pregnant, this will be most valuable. A good book on pregnancy nutrition will cover all the issues of good health during pregnancy and serve as the inspiration you most need now!

After getting pregnant, be sure to discuss an appropriate exercise program with your pediatrician. Each woman and pregnancy is unique. Follow your doctor’s advice! Report benefits, as well as any problems you may encounter with that regimen, promptly.

So, there you have the basics. Of course, your pediatrician is your best advisor. Run this basic list of after getting pregnant do’s and don’ts by your doc. Your baby is depending on you! Happy Baby to you!

Bulimia Support Groups

Bulimia Support Groups

There are quite a few eating disorders out there, and many people who do not have one of them find it hard to understand what they are all about and why someone can not just stop their unhealthy habits. Some people won’t eat, some people eat way too much, and some eat a lot but then purge it so that they do not absorb the calories. The last example is called bulimia, and this may be the most dangerous of all the eating disorders. Not only is a person not getting any calories, they are putting their throat and mouth in danger of serious damage because of stomach acid exposure. Those trying to recover do better when they find bulimia support groups to help them through the recovery process.

Those with bulimia control their weight by eating and then throwing up. It can be one of the hardest to spot because someone appears to eat normally but they remain thin. Some binge and purge, which means they eat great quantities of food and then throw it all up. They almost always do this in private so that no one knows what is really going on. After a while, they end up getting caught as those close to them catch them in the act, but that does not always put a stop to what is going on. Those that do this have a hard time quitting, even when in treatment, and they need bulimia support groups to help them with the hard parts.

Because those with eating disorders like bulimia don’t fully understand why they are doing what they are doing, it is almost impossible for those that do not have an eating disorder to understand and help them. Friends and family can help and try to help someone through this, but they can not give the same type of help that someone else can through bulimia support groups. Only those that are going through or have gone through the same thing can really understand what they are going through and offer them insight that can help.

If you have bulimia and you are trying to recover, do yourself a favor and find some bulimia support groups that you can use to help you along the way. Some people go through treatment to get better and have support groups as a part of their program, but some people either try to quit this on their own or they go out into the world afterward away from the group that they have been using. There are support groups in many places, so find one close by and make sure you go to get all that you can get through such a group to up your chances of success.

You can start going to bulimia support groups all the time, but they won’t do you much good if you do not open up. It is understandable that you may want to just listen in at first, especially if you find this to be a terribly personal situation. However, you get more out of support groups of any type if you try to add your support for others, and if you open up about your own ongoing battles so that others can share experiences with you. They can offer empathy and understanding that those that love you may not quite be able to give, simply because they don’t understand what is really going on in your mind.
