No matter what kind of vehicles your company owns, there are many ways to benefit from fleet GPS tracking data. The GPS devices can be used to help you protect your investment in the vehicles. More important, the data the devices monitor and send to your tracking station will help your employees effectively manage routing and extract information that can be used for a wide variety of management processes. If your company owns several vehicles, you need a fleet GPS system to make the most of your investment.

You Can Gather Useful Data

Connected to a satellite mapping service, your fleet GPS system will be able to provide instant routing information, a satellite view of the surrounding buildings and streets. You can also identify truck routes easily. More than this, you can gather this kind of data:

- Up-to-the-minute precision locating of each vehicle.

- History of routes driven with each vehicle.

- Ability to show the proximity of vehicles to a given location.

- Monitoring and alerts when drivers engage in unsafe driving practices, do things that waste fuel or violate traffic laws.

- System tracking and scheduling of vehicle maintenance and service.

- Fuel saving suggestions.

- Sensors and mechanisms to prevent theft or to help police locate the vehicle quickly if it is stolen.

- Ability to erect virtual geo-fences for vehicles.

- Ability to calculate alternate routes instantly when beneficial.

Ways to Use the Data

No matter how great it seems to think about these specific bits of information you will gather into your fleet GPS system’s memory, it is the use you can make of the data that makes it truly worth having. You will be able to use information to increase productivity of your employees, improve customer service, save fuel, save money, and automate several internal processes and functions. Here are just a few of the possible applications for the data you will gather with a fleet GPS system.

1. Use driver data to train drivers to be safer drivers and to drive in fuel-saving ways.

2. Driver information from fleet GPS tracking can provide the basis for performance based compensation and bonus programs, and the metrics tracking for implementation of the program.

3. Driver and route tracking maintained by your fleet GPS device provides needed documentation for dispute resolution of customer complaints, servicing time, schedule discrepancies.

4. Use instant routing to get lost drivers back on track or to route drivers around accidents or road construction.

5. Compare various routes and choose the best based on drive time, route specifics or fuel economy.

6. Use proximity mapping and routing to find the vehicle that can reach an emergency fastest.

7. Program driver alerts when speed limits are exceeded or other bad driving habits are used.

8. Implement and activate sensors using the fleet GPS system to prevent theft.

9. Automate many bookkeeping, time card verification and accounting and billing activities, as well as preventing errors.

10. Increase employee productivity in some industries.

11. Monitor use of vehicles outside defined areas or outside of specified times to eliminate personal use of vehicles.

12. Market your ability to schedule with spot-on accuracy.

13. Qualify for insurance discounts on vehicles equipped with fleet GPS devices.

The data tracked, functions enabled, and possible uses of data increase every year. Your fleet GPS system will likely pay for itself in one year or less in the savings you will achieve in just one area, like fuel savings. As you build more history and customize the system for each driver you will see more and more benefits of the system.

If you are not using a fleet GPS system you are missing out on far too many business efficiency tools. Shouldn’t you make the investment today?

The Macho Concept – First Generation Hispanics in the American Workplace

If you are serious about wanting to improve your communication at work this year, then take a peek at these top ten tips and choose just one to work on today. Tomorrow pick another and repeat the process. Choose the person you find the most difficult to listen to and challenge yourself to learn one new thing about him or her. Be deliberate. Initiate a conversation by asking an open-ended question about this person and prepare to listen for 60 seconds without interrupting.

I once asked a purchasing agent, who rarely got excited about anything and seemed a bit unapproachable, where he was going on vacation. I was surprised to learn that he loved to gamble in Vegas. His answer not only prompted more questions but provided a new way to approach him in the future. Schedule a feedback conversation with your manager or supervisor quarterly. Do not wait for your annual review. This is a critical conversation both managers and employees rarely approach with positive anticipation yet it is the perfect opportunity to increase your value. Ask for advice and put it to work.

Her remark sounded extremely odd to me. But I realized, after some thought, that our connection only lasted for a few seconds. So, saying “goodbye” logically made just as much sense as “hello.” It had simply never occurred to me before that someone would address the end rather than the beginning of these extremely short interactions. And truthfully, if some one I passed like this in the U.S. had said “goodbye” to me, I would have thought they were crazy.

Complain only to the person that can handle your concern. Don’t go home and whine to your spouse or unload to your cubicle neighbor about the unfairness of your boss. If you are constantly in conflict with the same person stop and ask yourself what might be another way to approach this person. Consider what fear or frustration this person may be experiencing and approach from that point-of-view.

Record your conversations. Replay when you can listen with a neutral ear. Listen closely for how frequently you interrupt, what message your voice sends and your enunciation. In my early twenties, I taped an interview for a class project and was horrified to hear myself say “true the park” instead of “through the park.” I only needed to hear it once to eliminate it from my speech forever. Curb destructive comments. They serve no one.

Eliminate “the problem with that is…” from your conversations. You might actually learn something. Listen. Really listen. It is the best tool for improving your communication. Learning how to handle critical conversations in the workplace takes the willingness to learn over the need to be right.
