Finding a Good Direct TV Deal

August 17th, 2010 No comments

This is the time of year when all kinds of deals are being offered on satellite television.  My brother just moved into a new home in my area, so he decided to do a little research on what he could get.  Of course he first was looking at getting one of the triple play deals that are available through cable television.  That looked pretty good at first glance to him on the surface, but once he got down to the nitty gritty with what Xfinity charges, the rate will jump up so much during the second year he knew it would be intolerable.

That of course led to checking into the latest Direct TV deals being offered.  Since we are originally from South Florida but now living in the Rocky mountains, we are starved for some Dolphin football.  With Brandon Marshall coming onboard for the 2010 season, it looks like we might actually be in a dogfight with the Jets and Patriots for the division.  The problem of course is once you move outside of your regular region, you don’t get the games you want on the network.  Now the Denver Broncos are fine for folks in this area, but for us to keep up on the latest with Miami, one of us was going to have to pony up so to speak and subscribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket package.

Fortunately for me my brother jumped all over the latest deal.  Basically, he paid for Sunday Ticket which is spread out over five months.  Direct TV then gives him access to the Premier package, which has over 260 channels for free for those five months.  After that, he can either stick with it at regular price, or downgrade to a lower priced offer.

The downfall of it all will hit us next year, when we will have to pay full price for the package.  I’m sure that I will be willing to split the price with him, either that or I’ll be responsible for all the pizza and beer next season.

Inspire your Music Skills With a Vintage Red Electric Guitar

August 17th, 2010 No comments

Although electric guitars are extremely popular instruments, merely playing it isn’t enough for everyone. Some people prefer to find the perfect guitar that fits them, with colour being the most obvious place to begin.

One of the more popular and striking guitar colours is red, both for acoustic and electric models, as well as the bass. Whatever the colour, they are usually made out of quality materials such as mahogany, rosewood, alder, basswood, poplar, maple or spruce. The type of wood used can actually subtly alter the sound that is emitted from the instrument. As some of these wood types are naturally reddish in colour, they create very stylish models that are not tainted by plastic of metallic finishing. The only problem is that the wood can get scratched or chipped fairly easily – not a great issue in terms of sound, but it can be annoying if you’ve spent a lot of money on a beautifully crafted model.

One of the most classic guitar looks is the red-bodied Fender Stratocaster with white scratchboard.  This has been popular since the 1950s rock and roll era and original USA manufactured models are well-sought after, often commanding a high price even though the body may be damaged. Although quite a plain colour scheme, it is very evocative of many classic guitarists. However, there are much cheaper copy versions that can be bought brand new for a fraction of the price, if the basic look is all you really care about. The red body with black scratchboard is also quite a popular colour scheme.

If classic red is too plain, you could consider maroon or burgundy type colours. These colours are much deeper and have an atmospheric ambience during night-time gigs, as well as looking really classy and warm. There is also the classic ‘sunburst’ look, an airbrushed orangey effect that jumps out at the audience.

In the end, the colour of your guitar isn’t going to improve your technical skill or the quality of sound that the instrument can produce, but a vintage red electric guitar might just give you the inspiration to be a better musician.

Pride and Prejudice Lives on Through Jane Austen Fanfiction

August 11th, 2010 No comments

For several years now, there have been an increasing number of Jane Austen fanfiction sites online. In fact, several of some sites have even started to say that ‘the end is only the beginning’ for the novel, which is increasingly true. What this meant is that the end of the original book paved way to avid Jane Austen fans and readers to recreate their own Pride & Prejudice memoirs, perceptions and plots, and to share them with others in the world as fanfic.

Because Jane Austen’s work was perceived to be short lived due to her early death, it is her avid fans and readers who think that they are the best candidates to retell the stories that have been able to attract so many readers for over 2 centuries. This is because they have read the book numerous times and have been able to relate one point of their life to it. They respect Jane Austen and her craft but they know that they could expand on the lives of the characters as well as the situations that the famous author has left them with. These stories are called fanfictions or fanfics and are usually posted on websites or blogs. It is worth noting that some are also quite good, while others seem to lack a the polish you would expect. The truth is that some stories are more than good, they are good enough to become published sesquels on their own.

The funny thing about these fanfic stories is that there are thousands to choose from, with more being written every day. Aside from the number, some have been given a modern twist in order to fit today’s ideals on society and lifestyle, while others are Regency era and true to the original. Not to mention, there are also some that have such an imaginative and creative storylines that that they have gone to greater lengths to revive the novel by bringing a whole new audience to those who find the sequels first and then read the classic after the fact. Among these variations are the zombie versions of the book entitled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This is an absolute mind boggler and there mixed emotions about it by readers. While it is funny, there are a lot of people who think that it shows disrespect to the talent Jane Austen has entrusted us with. Although others see nothing wrong and feel that the greatest flattery to Jane Austen is that 200 years after her death so many still wish to remake her classic characters.

Whatever emotion people may have about Jane Austen fanfiction, the fact is they are there. They exist. And as long as people love reading about the original novels or watching the movie adaptations of the books, they will keep having an imaginative mind that will keep yearning for more. It is with this reason why JA fanfics have been born. And this is why classic and much loved books such as Pride and Prejudice will continue to live on through Jane Austen fanfiction.
