Anxiety Relief: What You Must Know

Stress comes to us all and it’s inevitable that we have to deal with it. Some people are better at managing stress than others. Sadly, there are some who simply cannot handle the overwhelming stress, causing them to have a breakdown. This poses a serious issue and can be debilitating to their lives. There are many ways in which one can seek anxiety relief and most patients react well to the treatments. They too begin to lead their lives normally as they manage their stress better.

Before one can seek treatment, he must first be diagnosed. Once there is an accurate diagnosis, the treatment plan can be devised to help combat his anxiety and stress. There are three types of anxiety relief: continual therapy, short term fixes that help to deal with his symptoms and lifelong changes that maintain our bodies in homeostasis.

The Long Haul

Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft are the few anxiety relief treatments. They are antidepressants under the group termed as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and their purpose is to disable receptors in the brain that absorb serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that enhances one’s mood. When used as treatment, they can help to provide a steady level of relief. The effects are usually felt in the span of a month.

SSRIs can be taken along with other medications because it rarely causes any side effects. The drug is also not addictive in nature. When considering discontinuing the dosage, one should gradually wean off instead of stopping completely. This gives the brain some time to recondition itself. Unfortunately, some victims have to be put on a lifelong prescription plan.

The effectiveness of psychotherapy on anxiety issues has been raved about by many patients. Essentially what happens during psychotherapy is that the patient will channel positive thoughts and modify his behaviour. These behaviour modifications have to be continual throughout his lifetime. These modifications are mostly routines and exercises that allow one to better manage his stressful situations.

Short term, or rescue relief, is confined to medications in the benzodiazepine class that are generally termed “tranquilizers” and are reserved as a stop gap measure when the sufferer feels that the current situation has the possibility of triggering an attack.

These medicines go by the name of Xanax, Valium and Ativan. The three medicines are the more common and popular anxiety relief medication. When consumed, the effects are usually felt within an hour. The patient will be relieved of his symptoms instantly. These medications should only be used in dire needs such as the rise of a highly stressful situation and not during normal daily routines that can be easily managed.

Relaxation Techniques

Diversion of one’s thoughts to alleviate stress has become a prevalent method of relieving anxiety. Always try to channel your thoughts onto an image or situation that is soothing in nature. Imagine yourself in a peaceful setting, one where stress has no place. Focus your energy and shut out all negative thoughts for five minutes. Most people find this relaxation technique to be helpful when they are inundated with stress.

Herbal teas brewed with St John’s Wort or Chamomile leaves have been utilised for generations as a concoction to induce calmness. There are many other herbs that do the trick as well. The best course of treatment always incorporates the different methods of treatments to help expedite the recovery process.
