And a Way Forward – Betrayal of Trust

Two thousand years ago Pontius Pilate asked a deep and profound question that has rung down through the ages. During his questioning of Jesus when the Lord said that He came into the world to bear witness to the truth, Pilate responded saying, “What is truth?” In this modern age of mass media with spin doctors and the use of “weasel words” it is probably harder to find the truth than ever before. Add to this those who hide behind political correctness and it is increasingly difficult to arrive at the truth in anything. But we are fortunate that the Lord also gave us a test to separate truth from error.

Now I am concerned primarily with truth in a Christian sense, but the test will also hold true for non-Christian matters too. After all, in any matter there may be many perceptions, but there is only ever one truth. The test that the Lord gave us was in John 8:32-33 where it was written, “Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” Those last five words are the key to understanding truth, especially the truth of Christianity but also of truth in general.

In our society there has been an increasingly popular “spirituality” movement. Psychic readings, spiritual teachers and channeling abound. I believe the reason for this popularity is that we all want answers. We want the burning bush. We want to know what the future holds. Living a guided life, a life of faith, means living without being able to see our future – yet trusting that God has our future in his hands. Our faith comes ultimately from what is not seen.

Truth is self-evident and it is only through truth that the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness can occur. The alternative of lies, half-truths and trickery can only bring bondage, unhappiness and ultimately death. It was against this background that the Declaration was framed and the subsequent actions including war were taken. You must also understand that there are no degrees of truth. There is no such thing as a half-truth or something being partially true. Either a matter is true or it is not. Indeed a half-truth is worse than an out and out lie because a person can be swayed into believing something false because part of what is presented is true.

Romans 15:4 says, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” The Scriptures also have words of wisdom to heed if we worry or think too much about the future.

Matthew 6:24 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Many times we fail to live in the present moment. It takes discipline to constantly direct our thoughts to the present moment. The present is really all that we have because none of us is promised tomorrow in the material world. Pay attention to what happens in your life and think about how God has worked in a situation. Be conscious of being connected to God. If you dwell on the past and worry about the future, you’ll miss out on living. Decide today to stay in the present moment and feel God guiding you in your life.
