CRT vs. LCD

Many people will immediately think getting an LCD for their computer is the best option there is. While LCD’s definitely a technological gem, there are a few reasons why CRT’s continue to exist these days.

CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, and obviously has been around since the dawn of computers themselves. It utilizes the same technology as old-fashioned TV’s. The good thing about CRT screens is that they provide greater color fidelity. They reproduce color better, so they’re good for people who deal with a lot of graphics and images. Obviously, CRT’s are a more affordable option than LCD screens.

Now, let’s go into its drawbacks. CRT’s are generally bulkier, heavier and emits more heat. That’s why when opting for a CRT display, you should know exactly the available space on your desk. You don’t want to buy a larger desk after purchasing something a monitor too bulky for what you currently have. And since they emit more heat, you can be sure that they also consume more energy.

Thin, lightweight and elegant – such are the irresistible features of an LCD screen. It also consumes less electricity and generates less noticeable heat, if any. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; others may choose to refer to it as a flat screen monitor. When first introduced in the market, they carried staggering price tags. Now, however, they have become main stream as their prices dropped (but still generally more expensive than CRT’s).

Obviously it’s the in thing these days to have. But there are a few drawbacks to LCD’s you might want to know about. Compared to CRT counterparts, they have limited viewing angle. So when viewed slightly from the side, the colors dramatically fade out, or you can’t see anything at all. Also, some flat screens have trouble displaying fast motion properly. This blurring is quite evident when watching action-packed movies.

What Else to Consider?

Your choice of a computer screen should also depend on what you’ll be using it mostly for. For instance, for a once-in-a-while spreadsheet, document or e-mail creation, or web browsing, an average one will do. Otherwise, you might need something that carries more features to your advantage.

Some monitors come packaged with the entire computer setup. Make sure you inspect it first – the specs, brand and item features. Opting for a monitor that comes with integrated ports, multimedia card readers, speakers and cam can be an advantage as well. That is, if you do not have yet these items purchased separately.
