A Laptop For Every Sixth Grader
The ability to read and write should be thoroughly instilled in the life of a student by the time he is in sixth grade. Nearly every sixth grader has an innate ability to work with a computer and figure out how to use it. This is the reason it is important for every sixth grader to have his own computer at his desk in the classroom. A laptop works best for this type of situation.
The size and weight of these computers make them extremely mobile. This allows them to be used at home, in the library and in the classroom itself. Students can easily move them to the area of the classroom where they are needed.
Since the newer laptops have wireless capabilities, it makes them even easier to use. It is possible for each student to have his own computer right at his desk where he can do his schoolwork on it. Computer labs can become a thing of the past, allowing students to have extra time in class. Laptops can even be taken on field trips where students can type in their thoughts and save them for a later project.
Having a computer at their desk allows students unlimited access to online resources. They have encyclopedias, search engines, discussion groups and an infinite number of resources at their fingertips. They can ask questions and find answers by participating in virtual online communities of other students.
An exciting aspect of having individual laptops in the classroom is that the students can do group projects. Each one can work on his part of the project at the same time. Files can easily be shared from one computer to the next. The students can communicate over the computer even while working in the classroom.
Having his own computer to take care of, teaches the student a new type of responsibility. It teaches him that he is responsible for his education and that his computer is the door to that education. He will come to appreciate it for the tremendous tool that it is. This will increase his self-confidence and will give him a greater desire to succeed.
Teachers and students have greater communication. It is much easier for students to communicate with teachers and express their deeper thoughts when they are not afraid that they will be scorned or laughed at by their peers. Teachers can give more help on a personal basis.
Students who have the opportunity to have their own computer at their desk are far more advanced than students who don’t. The laptop is a tool in the learning process that can help prepare the student for the future. He will learn the vital keys that will be necessary to live in a digital age.
