A Brief History Of Roller Shades

December 26th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

Roller shades have been in existence for many years. Way back in the good ole days, lots of people had roller shaded installed in their windows. There are lots of these window shades that still look really good even by today’s standards. Most of the older antique roller shades have been long dead and gone by now. There are also mechanical parts inside that may break down over time and materials that just haven’t stood well to time.

One of the common problems people had with roller shades was a problem with the roller internal parts. And after that they will not roll up anymore. Or they will get stuck in position. If the shade will not roll back up you may be able to do it your self and tighten the springs and it may again roll up on its own.

Now if the roller shade get stuck in place and you cant roll it by hand you will only have the choice of getting a new roller unit. This way you will be able to keep the look of you old shade. And this is good because it will be hard to find window shades that have the same print to match your room if they have any age to them.

Another problem with the roller shades weren’t the shades fault but when installed if the bottom bar was left to long it would wind up marking up the window. Now, that wasn’t really an issue with the shade as much as it was the install. All you had to do was shorten the bottom bar to fit into the window.

All of these problems and damage to the fabrics the roller shade ended up with a bad name for a while because people would keep them up in poor repair. With worn fabrics, and broken rollers and couple that with the repair process of these window shades was difficult to perform. Most of the time repairing these shades really meant it is time to replace them.

These window shades also had problems messing up the windowsills. The bottom bar after repeated use would mark the windows. This damage was caused by an improper fit in the window and was easily repaired by cutting the bottom bar. Also if the shade weren’t perfectly level in the window you would wind up damaging the fabric.

And they will last longer also, unlike plastic slat window shades they stand up very well to pulling on them. Anyone who has ever had a child pull on the slat blinds knows that that one pull could very well be the end of that shade.

A lot of people did try to fix and update or upgrade their shades, it really is best place to just replace them, the newer controls will last longer and that will keep the fabric looking better for a longer period of time. But these window shades do have a place in the home. Nothing is more beautiful then a really nice print in the window catching the morning light. Or a nice blur shade, making the outside blur like the background of a really nice portrait. There are tons of ways you can decorate with these shades and endless print styles.
